The Day of the Great Market A2.2

A historical fiction story by Lily Green

Once upon a time, in a small village in England, there was a big event every year. This event was called the Great Market. The Great Market was a day when people from many villages came together to sell and buy things. It was a special day for everyone.

The village was called Willow Creek. In Willow Creek, there lived a young girl named Anna. Anna was twelve years old. She was very excited because the Great Market was coming soon. Anna loved the market. She loved to see the colorful stalls and the happy people.

On the morning of the Great Market, Anna woke up early. The sun was shining, and the birds were singing. Anna quickly got dressed. She wore her best dress, which was blue with white flowers. After breakfast, she ran outside. The streets were busy. People were setting up their stalls. There were many different things to see.

Anna walked with her friend, Tom. Tom was her neighbor, and he was also twelve years old. They were both excited. "Look at that!" Anna said, pointing to a stall with shiny pots and pans. Tom smiled. "I want to see the apples!" he said. They walked to another stall where a kind woman was selling fresh apples. The apples were red and green, and they looked delicious.

Anna and Tom decided to buy some apples. They had a little money saved from doing chores. They bought three apples for two coins. Anna took a big bite of her apple. "Yummy!" she said. Tom nodded, his mouth full of apple.

After eating the apples, they walked around the market. They saw many interesting things. There were colorful scarves, beautiful jewelry, and tasty breads. Anna loved the smell of the fresh bread. She wanted to buy a loaf for her family. Tom saw a man selling toys. The toys were wooden and looked fun to play with.

"Can we buy something for my little brother?" Tom asked. Anna agreed. They decided to buy a small wooden car. It was only three coins. They had enough money left from their chores.

As they continued to explore, they heard music. A group of musicians was playing cheerful songs. People danced and clapped their hands. Anna and Tom joined the crowd. They laughed and danced, feeling happy. The music made the market even more special.

After dancing, they felt tired. They sat on a bench to rest. Anna looked around and saw a man telling stories. He was an old man with a long white beard. He had a big smile and bright eyes. Many children sat around him, listening carefully.

Anna said, "I want to hear his stories!" Tom agreed, and they quickly moved closer. The old man began to tell a story about a brave knight. The knight fought a dragon to save a village. The children listened with wide eyes. Anna imagined the knight in shining armor. The story was exciting and made her feel brave.

After the story, Anna and Tom thanked the old man and continued to walk. They saw a stall with beautiful flowers. The flowers were bright and smelled sweet. Anna loved flowers. She wanted to buy some for her mother.

"Can we buy flowers, Tom?" she asked. Tom looked at his coins. They had just enough. They bought a small bouquet of colorful flowers. Anna was very happy.

As the sun began to set, the sky turned orange and pink. The market was still busy, but it was getting late. Anna and Tom decided it was time to go home. They walked back through the market, enjoying the last moments of the day.

On their way home, Anna said, "Today was wonderful! I loved the stories, the apples, and the flowers!" Tom nodded. "Me too! I loved the music and the toys!" They both smiled, thinking about all the fun they had.

When Anna got home, her mother was waiting for her. "How was the Great Market?" her mother asked. Anna smiled and said, "It was amazing! We bought apples and flowers!" She showed her mother the bouquet. Her mother looked pleased. "These flowers are beautiful, Anna! Thank you!"

Anna felt happy to share her day with her mother. She told her about the stories and the dancing. Her mother listened carefully, smiling at every word.

After dinner, Anna went to her room. She thought about the Great Market. She felt grateful for the fun day with Tom. She loved her village and all the people in it. Anna dreamed of what next year’s market would be like. Maybe there would be even more stories, music, and fun.

As she closed her eyes, she thought, "I can’t wait for next year!" And with that happy thought, she fell asleep, dreaming of knights, dragons, and the wonderful Great Market.
